3 Things to look for in Home Health Care!

Until it sneaks up on most of us don't really know much about home health care! Then we have to learn fast all their is to know to make a quick decision. When we should think about it earlier on and research it out before it sneaks up on us. That way we are more prepared for the future.

Home health care allows patients to recuperate or receive treatment in familiar surroundings of home. As good as hospitals are, it is not  possible for hospital personnel to give the direct one on one attention that a home health care professional can give. Patients often experience frustration, depression, and anger in the unfamiliar surroundings of an institution. But in the comfort of their own home, not only do they feel better, recovery times can be shorter.

Patients that can benefit from home heath care include occupational injury sufferers or seniors facing health problems that require care, but not hospitalization. Indeed, anyone young or old, needing health care, recuperative physiotherapy, chronic care, medical attention, palliative care or assistance with personal care can benefit from in home care.

Here are a few things to look for when trying to find the perfect home healthcare to fit your needs.

1. Qualified Personal- This might sound obvious but you would be surprised at the lack of training of many so called home health care professionals. Make sure the person or people who will be providing the care are qualified in the particular care needed.

2. Established Home Health Care Agency- A established agency will be able to provide around the clock home health care for as long as you need it. The best agencies will have home health care manager who will be familiar with patients health care history and special needs. This means that any new caregivers will be up-to-date on patient's particular needs. You should also look for an agency that is managed by health care providers. They understand patients and their needs better then those who provide healthcare as a business opportunity.

3. Communication- Your home health care provider needs to be a good communicator. Very often, the home health care provider becomes a companion and confidante for the patient. The patient bonds with the caregiver because they feel the caregiver is the only one who understands what they are going through. The caregiver needs to be able to properly communicate and interpret outside information for the patient. Your home health care provider also needs to communicate with friends and family of the patient to make sure they are aware of the patient's condition, care, and concerns.

It is key that your loved one receives the best in home care available.

Another Update

I forgot to take pictures of what my leg looked like when I took off the bandages and compression stocking last night. I will have to do that tonight when I take the new compression stocking off.

It actually didn't look as bad as I was expecting. It just bruised bad in two spots. But it doesn't hurt to touch it actually feels good to touch it. The site is warm feeling which is to be expected. I slept better last night then I have all week. I have to say that compression stocking is what kept me up! My leg is swollen and the doctor said it could take up to 6 weeks for that to go away. I for sure don't think they would do 2 legs at once. But if they do I wouldn't recommend it.

As the reason why is your leg is so swollen I don't see how you could walk comfortably. I have had some questions about the procedure.

It took about a hour for the procedure. The only pain you feel is sticks from the shots to numb the area. Which isn't bad. I felt pressure from the laser going in. I would have to say the most pain you feel is going to be the first night of sleep. My leg ached kinda reminded me of when you where little and had growing pains.

The only think I have been taking is 600 mg of Ibuprofen for the inflammation. Which they recommend. They usually prescribe Mobic but I can't take that and nurse my baby. So, they told me Ibuprofen for the inflammation and Tylenol for pain.

If you are thinking of having this done I seriously recommend it. I have had problems with varicose veins from my first pregnancy. The doctor told me the most common cause of varicose veins is pregnancy due to the fact the fetus lays on the left side. Which all mine where in my left leg. Most women are lucky and theirs go away after having a baby but I was not one of them.

I have been waiting for awhile to have this done. Since we finally decided that we are not going to try for anymore babies. The key word is try and the fact that they have bothered me really bad the last 3 pregnancies and haven't gotten back tolerable we decided to get this done and over with.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I will be happy to answer them to the best of my ability.

Surgery Update!

I had my laser vein surgery yesterday. All went well. I felt fine afterwards and had to go walk the mall for 30 minutes after the surgery. I then had to go walk another 30 minutes later that afternoon.

I didn't sleep good last night as the pain woke me up twice last night. From what I heard the first night is the worst. We shall see how tonight goes. The part that is the worst is bending my leg too much. It is hard for me to get dressed and put socks on for sure. I have to wear a compression stocking and compression bandage till Thursday when I can take it all off and wash that leg. After that I have to wear a compression stocking on that leg during the day hours only for 4 more days. I go back in next Monday for a one week check up. I can see bruising where my leg is not covered. I am not ready to see how bad bruised the rest of my leg is. The pain is very tolerable. But I am taking Motrin for inflammation per the doctor.

I have to walk for 30 minutes twice a day. I also have to walk around 5 minutes out of every hour. To ad on top of this mess I got a unexpected visitor. I was hoping she wouldn't show up but she did as soon as I got home. Aunt flow was not a nice surprise. I do plan on posting before and after pictures.

Having Surgery.....

After much waiting I am finally getting laser vein surgery done. I have had bad varicose veins in my left leg since having my first baby 14 years ago. As most know that it is common to get them when pregnant. It is most common for them to be in the left leg due to the baby fetal position. Which in my cause is where they are. I have gotten a new one with every pregnancy and they don't get better after having my babies. Yes, the swelling goes down some but they due protrude.

Since insurance wouldn't cover it being done till 6 months post baby here I am! At first they thought it was 3 months so we went through everything 3 months ago just to find out it was 6 months. And of course my insurance had to due that so know we have to pay another deductible. But anyways I had my doctor appointment today and they where able to schedule my surgery for this Monday!

I am so relieved to be able to finally get this over with. I am tired of the pain these have caused me but at the same time I am kinda of skeptical of the pain after the procedure. I am going to take pictures of before and after. I will be in compression stockings and a compression wrap for 3 days. So, due to this I may or may not be updating my blog.

Olive Tap Review!

I love adding different flavors to my food! So, I was excited to try The Olive Tap's Tuscan Herb olive oil. I used it to marinade some chicken. I also added some rosemary and thyme to the mix. It made for a delicious meal!

I also got to try Aceto Balsamico di Modena, 4 Leaf Quality which is a balsamic  vinegar. This was great on a salad as a dressing. It is a little sweet but perfect! It don't take much either.

The Olive Tap has tons of different variety's of flavored olive oils, gourmet sauces, marinade's, gift baskets and much more.

If you are into trying new flavors and want to feel like a gourmet chef you should check them out. I always cook with extra virgin olive oil and they have tons of different varieties! I am definitely going to have to try some!

Valentine's Day: Heart Healthy Meals

For a holiday that is represented by hearts and showing the love to those around you, Valentine's Day is the perfect time to start showing your own heart a little bit of love this season.

As most of us know by now exercise is critical to keeping your heart in shape, but also the food that you put in your body has just as large of an influence on the health of your most talked about organ. So, why not this Valentine's Day, take some time to think about the impact of your food choices on your heart and follow some of the below tips and advice to ensure a happy and healthy heart. Share these tips with the ones you love over a heart-healthy meal.

  • Substitute high-fat foods for lower-fat counterparts. Use liquid oils when cooking like olive and canola oil instead of solid fats like butter and margarine.
  • Reduce fat and keep an eye on salt consumption by trying out a variety of spices and seasonings. Bouillons are a great way to add seasonings without adding fat. Try beef flavored Herb-Ox bouillon sodium-free granules that are perfect to add a unique flavor to gravies, marinades, soups, stews, rice dishes, pasta dishes and stir-fries.
  • Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories and high in fiber, which is great for your heart. Grabbing a handful of vegetables is a quick, perfect, heart-healthy snack during the day. Use the leftovers to throw into a pasta dish later in the evening. If you're on the go, try the small, compact, and delicious CHI-CHI's Snackers with carrots or celery.
  • Consume at least 4 servings of nuts, legumes, and seeds each week and avoid more then 36 ounces of sugar-sweetened beverages each week.
  • Lean proteins help to provide you with a sense of fullness and keep hunger at bay in between meals. Try a Hormel Always Tender pork roast for dinner, packed with 18 g of protein, in either a roast flavor or onion and garlic roast.
What are you doing to celebrate this Valentine's Day? Do you make heart themed meals?
